Running WATCHOUT 6 on Windows 11
WATCHOUT 6 development was largely completed before Windows 11 was released. While there is no official certification, many users and Dataton's own team have confirmed it works on Windows 11, including the LTSC variant.
Compatibility Status
-
Windows 11 Pro / Enterprise: Works. Multiple users report stable operation on both production and display servers.
-
Windows 11 Enterprise IoT LTSC: Works. Dataton uses this on their own newer hardware. Confirmed stable with no differences compared to Windows 10 LTSC.
Windows 11 on ARM: NOT supported. Do not use ARM-based Windows installations.
Recommendations
Before Upgrading
-
Create a full system backup so you can roll back if needed.
-
Test thoroughly before deploying to production — test, test, test.
-
Do NOT upgrade during an active show run.
After Installing Windows 11
-
Remove unnecessary services and apps — Windows 11 installs many background services that consume resources and can interfere with real-time playback.
-
Apply the WATCHOUT tweaking guide — disable Windows Update automatic restarts, power management, screen savers, and other interfering features.
-
Verify capture card drivers — ensure your capture cards (Blackmagic, Datapath, Magewell, etc.) have Windows 11 compatible drivers. Use the manufacturer's own test/viewer app to confirm the card works before testing in WATCHOUT.
-
Test all outputs — verify all display outputs, audio outputs, and network connections work correctly.
Known Considerations
-
The Create Feedback Report feature is only available in WATCHOUT 7, not WATCHOUT 6.
-
Some older capture cards may not have Windows 11 drivers — check with the card manufacturer.
-
If you experience stability issues, consider Windows 11 Enterprise IoT LTSC, which has fewer background services.
WATCHOUT 7
For new installations, consider upgrading to WATCHOUT 7, which is fully tested and supported on Windows 11.
