GPU & Display Driver Best Practices for WATCHOUT
The GPU is one of the most performance-critical components for WATCHOUT. Incorrect driver versions, unsupported GPU models, or wrong NVIDIA Control Panel settings are common causes of rendering errors, color shifts, and crashes. This article covers best practices for GPU selection and configuration.
Recommended GPUs
NVIDIA (Preferred)
WATCHOUT is primarily developed and tested against NVIDIA professional GPUs:
-
NVIDIA RTX A-series (A2000, A4000, A4500, A5000, A6000) — Current recommendation for WO7.
-
NVIDIA Quadro P-series (P2200, P4000, P5000, P6000) — Well-tested with WO6.
-
NVIDIA Quadro RTX series (RTX 4000, RTX 5000) — Supported.
Tip: WATCHPAX units ship with pre-selected GPUs. Do not replace the GPU in a WATCHPAX unless directed by Dataton Support.
AMD (Limited Support)
-
AMD Radeon Pro and FirePro cards work with WATCHOUT but receive less testing.
-
Some AMD GPUs (e.g. WX8200) have exhibited compatibility issues with specific motherboard/chipset combinations. NVIDIA is the safer choice for new builds.
-
AMD WX9100 - Confirmed working in WO6 for multi-output setups.
Consumer GPUs
Consumer NVIDIA GeForce cards can work for testing and development, but are not recommended for production use due to driver stability differences and missing Mosaic/Sync support.
Driver Management
Rule: Do Not Blindly Update
WATCHOUT release notes list the tested NVIDIA driver version for each release. Always prefer the tested driver over the latest one.
-
WATCHOUT 7.7.x: Check the release notes PDF included with the installer.
-
WATCHOUT 6.6.7: Includes a fix for color conversion issues with newer NVIDIA drivers (previously, updating beyond a certain driver version caused H.264 color shifts).
How to Install a Specific Driver Version
-
Download the correct driver from NVIDIA Driver Archive.
-
Select Professional → your GPU model → your Windows version.
-
Perform a Clean Install (check the box in the NVIDIA installer) to remove any old driver remnants.
Known Driver Issues
-
NVIDIA 5xx.xx series: Some versions caused H.264 color conversion issues on RTX A-series GPUs in WO6. Fixed in WATCHOUT 6.6.7.
-
NVIDIA 4xx.xx series: Stable baseline for WO6 with Quadro cards.
NVIDIA Control Panel Configuration
For best WATCHOUT performance, configure the following in the NVIDIA Control Panel:
-
Manage 3D Settings → Power Management Mode: Set to "Prefer Maximum Performance".
-
Manage 3D Settings → Vertical Sync: Set to "Off" (WATCHOUT manages its own frame timing).
-
Configure Mosaic (if using multi-output from a single GPU): Set up the Mosaic topology before launching WATCHOUT so that the outputs appear as one large virtual display.
Troubleshooting
BSOD referencing nvlddmkm.sys
This is an NVIDIA kernel-mode driver crash. Common fixes:
-
Roll back to the Dataton-recommended driver version.
-
Perform a clean driver install.
-
Check GPU thermals - overheating GPUs crash more frequently.
Rendering errors or visual artifacts
-
Verify the GPU driver version matches the WATCHOUT release notes.
-
Check that the GPU has sufficient VRAM for your content (HAP-Q at 4K uses ~40 MB per frame).
-
On multi-GPU systems, ensure all GPUs run the same driver version.
